James and Emma had three children, when Charles their middle child died. Charles Jacob Mengel died at at tender age of three years old. His older sister Anna Louisa died a month later. They share a tombstone. Charles died of Scarlett Fever. The only child remaining was David who was just an infant.

At this time Anna Louisa cause of death is unknown. She was the oldest child. She was 6 years old when she died.
