Kehoe was in that cell 18 months. He was released to eat and go to the toilet, that was the only times. He did have the choice to be face up or down, that was all. People today do not realize what conditions were like then. At Eastern Pen, the prisoners had to wear hoods over their heads the whole time of their sentence, there was a hole to eat with, nothing else. The hood was heavy cloth, maybe like canvas, and could not be removed. The cliche was that anyone who served 7 years or more was no longer sane when released. At Mauch Chunk, the basement cells were like dungeons, the windows painted black so no light came in, and much of the time there was water on the floor. Eric
