About the Mollies, I never heard of them while
growing up. After I had moved to
South Carolina I found a book in the library called Lament for the Molly
Maguires by Jake Haas of Girardville. I took it home and read it and called
my mother all excited because so many of the family names were familiar to
me. She just said "where did you hear that?, it is not allowed." I
told
her it was all in a book by Jake Haas. He lived on Main Street in
Girardville and it was a sympathetic rendition. I knew that my uncle George
Foy's great grandfather, Jack Kehoe, had been hung but I didn't know the
circumstances. He had a bar over off Ogden Avenue and it is still in
existence to this day. The Ancient Order of Hibernians would meet there
back in his day..
From all I can find, if those same men were on trial today they would be
exonerated. The jury was composed of Dutchmen who could not speak English
and most of the charges were trumped up. In most cases the men hung were
what they called Body Masters. I have a list (obviously not complete) of
the Mollies and Michael Sweeney is not listed. Jack Kehoe is listed as a
County Delegate. This all occurred after the mine owners had cut wages 20%
and the miners went on strike. They were out to break up any semblance of
unity among the miners. Some think that there never were any "Molly
Maguires" but that it was a rumor started to disavow te Ancient Order.
People were in fear of the Mollies, even the Irish. There is a lot of
information on the computer about the so called Mollies.
