Friday night someone told a story of
some miners who thought it would be funny to take a
mule to the saloon and get it drunk. Mules will drink
beer. Anyhow they did, but the mule was trained and
operated by a Polish speaking miner, and nobody was
Polish, so they were unable to make the mule leave after
it got drunk. Mine mules weere directed by voice
commands only, they did not have lines or reins. Maybe
someone will put the story on here and where it happened.

my grandfather told
me a story of an incident where this fellow
apparently lost his senses and took all the mules into town
and started auctioning them off ...this was late at
night ..(and of course no one was around to bid on
them) ....this happened in Centralia around late 1880s
early 1890s ...My grandfather knew the guy because he
work with him tending the mules ....wasnt much later
he(grandad) left for New York City ...where he met my
grandmom ...who was from Shenandoah..wonder why she left ?

mules in the mines. This seems an obscure
topic today, but a century ago when mining was the
major industry of the nation, mules were of vital
importance. Stables were provided both above and below
ground, men made lifetime careers of caring for the
mules.
The man who abused mules could be fired and
blacklisted, M. Kesterson has provided me an account of this
happening at Shamokin. The man never left Shamokin, and he
never worked in the mines again, either.
David
Kuchta, who is helping to restore the Lansford No. 9 for
tourists, is working on a book about the mine mules. Maybe
we can find out how he is coming along on this. Eric
