Deane-Dean-Dane families gather for seventh annual
reunion
LOST CREEK - The Mayo Clan met again at this tiny, pleasant Schuylkill County community.
The Deane-Dean-Dane and related families celebrated their seventh annual memorial reunion
over the Memorial Day weekend, May 23-24.
A social hour was held in St. Mary Magdalene's Parish Hall for the local families and on
Saturday for the out-of-town arrivals. The usual food and beverages were served with
everyone enjoying themselves. .
The Memorial Mass was celebrated in the Church at 10 a.m. on Sunday by the Fathers Dean -
Msgr. Michael, pastor of St. Cyril of Alexandria. E. Lansdowne, Penna. and the Rev. Father
Walter, of the Novitiates Order. Childs. Md. Msgr. Dean is a native of Lost Creek and
Father Dean hails from Glenside, Penna.
Following the Mass the clan members gathered on the Church grounds, renewing
acquaintances. taking pictures and exchanging greetings. ;
During the interim between the conclusion of the Mass and the dinner, members visited with
each other, saw area friends and relatives and also paid their respects to deceased
members at the local cemeteries.
A delicious home-style turkey dinner was served at Groody's in Ashland.
Prior to the dinner an informal meeting was held with gift giving in order again this
year. Msgr. Deane received an appropriate gift, a Blackthorn Walking (stick) cane made
from pure wild Irish Blackthorn, having undergone hip surgery the early part of the year.
William Dean of Glenside, father of the Rev. Walter, and the oldest member of the clan in
attendance, was the recipient of an Irish "Shillelagh" strictly for self defense
only ,.to be used on his daily walks in Glenside. The gilts were imported through Shannon
Ireland Airport duty free shops.
Bill Dean .clan member of the 90 plus age group, passed away during the past year, Tom
Wood of Lost Creek and Delia Carey Maloney of Upper Darby celebrated their 91s1
and 92nd birthdays. .
Father Waller Dean received a book entitled, "Home Book of lrish
Humor," edited by John McCarthy.
Other gifts in .the form of family photos of Andrew and Catherine Rowan-Deane and their son.in.law, Michael McBride, were
presented to their great-grandchildren, all of the Shamokin branch of the clan. They are
the grandchildren of Bridget

Deane Mc.Cormick. The photos were treasured items of Margaret
"Maggie' Deane Deane, mother of Terrence and Patrick, and great-grandmother of many
in attendance including the Wood, Rooney and Maloney families, who have been the annual
active supporting families of the program. Special acknowledgement and thanks were
extended to Marguerite Deane Wood Rooney for the success of each yearly program.
Most of the members in attendance arc descendants of the families of William and Mary Dean
Rowan, Martin and Honora Deane Deane, Patrick and Bridget Dean, Patrick and Bridget Cuff
Deane, Patrick and Mary Hogan Deane, Andrew and Catherine Rowan Deane, Michael and
Catherine Dean Carey, Michael and Rose Noone Deane and Bartholomew and Margaret Walsh
Dean.'
Eighty-five attended the dinner. A group discussion was held among members of the regional
clan in regard to the place and time for the 1982 reunion.
Families and individual members attending were from Philadelphia, New Jersey, Pottsville,
Shamokin, Williamsport, Middletown, Mountoursville, Fairless Hills, Mt. Carmel, Ashland,
Lock Haven, Kulpmont, Locust Gap, Centralia, Shenandoah, Mahanoy City, Frackville, Lost
Creek. Girardville, Brookhaven, Upper Darby, Steelton. Harrisburg. Landsdowne and
Marvland,
