Ellen Devitt, Wife of Wm. B. Carey, Dies at
Hospital Here
Fatal Complications Follow Attack of Bronchitis
Developed on Visit Here
Ellen Devitt, wife of Dr. William B. Carey, dentist, of Girardville and Shoemakersville,
and daughter of Attorney and Mrs. William Devitt, of Ashland, died yesterday
afternoon at the Ashland State Hospital after an illness of only one week. Ellen was 24
years of age and her unexpected death not only left her husband and family deeply bereaved
but proved a shock to all who knew the young lady in this section.
Was Taken Ill Here
Three weeks ago, Mrs. Carey came to the home of her parents on Centre st., near
2nd, here for a visit. While visiting here she became ill with bronchitis. A form of
poisoning developed and pneumonia set in to further complicate her condition. Last
Saturday she was removed to the Ashland State Hospital but despite all that was done for
her, she died there yesterday afternoon.
She was married last June in St. Joseph's Church here to Dr. Carey. The ceremony
was performed by her brother, Rev. Neil Devitt, a week after his ordination to
the priesthood. It was the first Nuptual High Mass Father Devitt performed.
Afterward the couple made their home at Shoemakersville, near Reading, where Dr.
Carey conducted a dental office in addition to his office in Girardville.
Graduated Here
Mrs. Carey was a graduate of St. Joseph's High School of Ashland, and attended
Immaculata College, at Immaculata, Pa. She was a young lady of pleasing
personality with a host of friends not only in Ashland but throughout this
section.
She is survived by her husband, her father and mother, and the following
brothers and sisters: Rev. Neil Devitt, stationed at St. Jerome's Church, in
Tamaqua; Edward, Clare, school teacher here; Frances, at home, and Bernadette,
student at Pierce's Business College in Philadelphia.
The funeral will be held Thursday morning with Requiem High Mass in St. Joseph's
Church here at 9:30 o'clock. Interment with M. J. Clarke, of Girardville, in
charge, will follow in the parish cemetery.
