| THE SWEENEY OBSEQUIES WERE LARGELY ATTENDED The remains of the late Mrs. Sarah D. Sweeney, of Big Mine Run, were laid to their last resting place at St. Patrick¢s Cemetery No. 3, at Pottsville. The funeral proceeded from the family home to St, Joseph¢s Church, Ashland, where solemn requiem mass was read for the happy repose of her soul, with Fr. McGettigan, celebrant; Fr McCullough, deacon, and Fr. Sullivan, subdeacon. A large attendance attested to the general esteem in which the deceased was held throughout the Mahanoy valley, while large delegations of friends and acquaintances came from neighboring towns to pay respect to her memory. Others were also present from Scranton, Wilkes-Barre, Philadelphia and Washington. The remains were encased in a handsome oak casket. The pall bearers were Dr. P.J. Gallagher and Michael Mack, of Washington, D.C.; James F. Minogue, Esq., of Ashland; Thomas Ferguson, of Big Mine Run, James Cunningham, of Philadelphia, and P. Carey, Alphonsus Sweeney and James Sweeney, of Girardville.
By marked
coincidence, Mrs. Sweeney was buried in Pottsville on the 60th
Anniversary of her marriage there in 1846, and on the 50 anniversary of the burial of her
brother, with whom she came to the county seat, from Ireland, in the year 1844.
